NMRA National Train Show 2009
For the fifth year, LEGO enthusiasts everywhere are invited to the ILTCO LEGO train layout that will be on display at the 2009 National Train Show. This year's show will occur 10-12 July, 2009 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, CT.
As part of the National Train Show, Jamie Berard, set designer of the newly released 'Emerald Night' and employee of The LEGO Group (TLG), will participate as part of the show. Jamie will be giving talks on July 10 and 11 (Fri. and Sat.) about the design process and thinking that led up to the final 'Emerald Night' set, and about the Power functions components that support it. Fans are encouraged to participate to offer their views on the new platform. Jamie will also be available during the show for questions about his other excellent creations - Fast Flyer, Cafe Corner, Cool Convertible, Green Grocer, and the newly available Grand Carousel.
Any and all LEGO clubs, ILTCO members, and individual AFOLs are invited to attend. Lots of trains, train related MOCs, and farm/ town/ city MOCs will be on display, so "all aboard!"

New Train Buffers Revealed!
Due to a safety accident with another toy producers product, the LEGO Group is expecting a ban of small parts that contain magnets in the USA and the EU from 2009. As a consequence the LEGO Group has decided to stop selling products which contain magnets in small parts to obey already now the new rules and make no compromise with product safety.
This affects mainly 2 products – the LEGO fridge magnets and the LEGO train magnet couplings.
The train magnets will be re-designed as you can see on the pictures and we expect the new magnets in the boxes from August. LEGO Train sets packaged before August will still contain the existing magnets. The new LEGO train magnet element will be visually different from the existing train magnet element but due to that the magnet can rotate in the plastic cover and the clutch power will be as strong as at the old element the function will be identical and fully compatible with the existing train magnet elements.
The LEGO fridge magnets will also be re-designed and the new version is expected to be available for sale end of 2008.

Steam Drivers !
Ben Fleskes (PNLTC) has done it! Big Ben Bricks (BBB) presents custom LEGO compatible 9v train driver wheels.
A link to the Sneak Peek gallery of pictures from the first run of the BBB drivers appears below. The wheels are ~3.75 studs (~1-3/16, ~3cm) diameter at the tread and ~4.6 studs (~1-1/2, ~3.7cm) diameter at the flange edge. There is a cross axle hole in the center and a rivet hole 1 stud off center. The tread and flange size and shape are similar to standard 9v wheels.
After the first prototypes are tested, Ben will be selling these in early December 2003 (www.BigBenBricks.com). He plans to make these available in four colors; black, dark gray, gray and red. There are also plans to include design notes to help the buyer get up and running quickly.
Ben is a mechanical engineer and has been modeling LEGO trains since 1996. He has pioneered many pure LEGO solutions for steam drivers, and has been thinking about and designing variations of these custom wheels for several years. These new drivers are an injection-molded part made from ABS plastic and manufactured in Portland, OR.
Check out the Sneak Peek Gallery to see these wheels in greater detail.

ILTCO Librarian Sought
ILTCO is looking to fill the role of Librarian and is accepting applications. The role entails reviewing submissions, ensuring they are appropriate for the ILTCO site, creating the short blurb text, title, and author credits, and updating the library section of the database as well as other related duties. It also entails fostering the creation of new types of submissions.
The ideal ILTCO Librarian would need to work closely with the ILTCO Web Master and would have a keen eye for detail, style, and format, as well as a good idea about how to best organize information as our volume of information grows to aid researchers in locating it easily. Knowledge of MySQL and PHP are helpful but not mandatory.
If you are interested in this volunteer position or if you have content (presentations, articles, information of general interest) to contribute, please contact library@iltco.org

Mark Riley develops DCC for the RCX!
DCC (Digital Command Control) is a means of sending electrical signals over tracks to control DCC equipped locomotives and accessories. DCC has been a topic of growing interest in the trains community. Many people have been daunted by the Command Station cost. But many of us have RCX 1.0 programmable bricks kicking around.
Mark has completed new firmware that enables the RCX to act as a DCC Command Station. Mark gives more info and downloads <a href=http://home.surewest.net/markril/lego/dcc/index.html>here</a>. More discussion can be found in this <a href= http://news.lugnet.com/robotics/rcx/?n=2080>lugnet.trains</a> (and robotics) thread.

Jeroen updates the Train Poster with the 2003 sets!
Thanks to lots of hard effort, the famed Train Poster has been updated with the new "World City" 2003 sets... says Jeroen: "New on this poster are (of course) the new models for 2003; the 4511 High Speed Train and the 4512 Cargo Train; some models have more details (like the 10013 have chains now) or stickers. Also new are the colours (thanks to some people in the LDraw community) and different lighting setup so the colours don't look so washed out."
